"The Red Gift" 6" x 6" oil

This series has certainly been fun to paint and it is great to be painting again after a long time off.   I actually was hesitant to paint and felt out of practice which goes to show that you really need to paint often to stay in practice, to make bold strokes and have the confidence to do so.   I feel that my style of painting has changed a little, for the good I think!

"Sipping coffee" 20" x 16" oil

We had the same model as a few months ago and my easel was about in the same vantage point.   I was planning on lighting her from the right side but it did not work out for everyone so we changed the light to the left.  On this painting I used a palette knife in some areas.

"Lavaski, in charcoal" 26" x 20" charcoal

Thought I would do a charcoal instead of a painting on last Friday.  Used a large vine charcoal about the size of my thumb and broke it in half.   The paper is arches.

"The Present with Red" 6" x 6" oil

This set up was a box tied with a white satin bow set on top of a white tablecloth.   Even though the cloth was white the brightest thing was the shine on the satin bow so I had to make the tablecloth less white.   Actually the cloth was a warm white so I added some yellow and red to the white.  I could have made it grayer or more blue but the shadows have that hue.  So there you have it, the story of the box.

Swirling Hair 18" x 14" oil

"The Package" 18" x 18" oil on wood panel

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!
A lot of you probably think I have been lazy, but no such luck.   I have cleaned my studio, rehung my art, participated in a city wide open studio weekend, got some much needed home repair work done and attended a workshop.   Now I am energized and ready to paint!

This is painted on a wood panel with 1.5" wood sides.   I hope to do more paintings in the larger size.

"Six forks and a cherry" 6" x 6" oil

Because of the curve in the fork, the cherry's reflection was prominent.   I have not noticed that before.   I started painting forks a couple of years ago because I was afraid to paint them, now I LOVE to paint them!   What was I afraid of.... those curved pointy little things?

Just so ya'll know, larger paintings is what I have been working on of late so I have not been doing these small daily ones.  I plan on putting in a few now and then just to keep up the practice.

"Lavaski surrounded" 16" x 12" oil

This was an experiment in using a simple palette and painting the light surfaces and making an impact.  Sometimes we think that the whole object or person needs to be lit up to make it recognizable.  You just have to make sure that the lit area has all the necessary information.
My palette colors: white, Prussian blue, Winsor Newton burnt sienna, cad red light.  (I did the background a few days before with who knows what colors!)

I know there are a lot of bourbon fans out there who like to smoke cigars.   The hardest thing is getting it lit!   My studio fills up with smoke which gives it a different air, no pun intended, just like there have been a half dozen men around.

"Solving the Puzzle" 6" x 6" oil

This crossword is from the Monday paper which I think is the easiest one to work and I can hardly get through it!  My parents were really good at this but evidently it is not in my DNA.   I can paint a good picture of it... does that count?   But I'm really good at Sudoku and Jigsaws puzzles!

"Velvet trimmed hat" 14" x 11" oil

The warm skin tone in contrast to the cool background is my favorite part of this sketch.   The background color I put on about three weeks ago with Gamblin Fast Matte colors.   It was a blend of burnt sienna, dioxazine purple, indian yellow, cad red light and ultramarine blue with a little quick dry white.   They have a matte finish and dry fast so they are good to put over an oil primed linen.

"Lavaski in Yellow" 14" x 11" oil

This is what I painted last Friday in our regular Friday group.  Over the weekend I taught a workshop in figure painting which has taken much of my time before and after the event.   Sorry that I have not posted much.   Thought I would include a close up of his face which is what I spent the most time on.   I love using the cool greens, blues and lavenders in contrast with the warm browns and reds.

"Reading Treasure Island" 8" x 8" oil

While searching for an image to put in the painting I came across this book about N.C. Weyth with the image of Treasure Island that he had painted.   The glasses are for reading the book, the coins are the treasure and the dice is for the uncertainly.

"Reading" 14" x 11" oil

There was a lamp on the table that glowed onto the book and table surface which in turn lit up her face.  I put a light behind her to make her hair profile stand out because what I like best about this is the face and hair shape.

"Woodford neat" 8" x 8" oil

Woodford Reserve seems to be a popular bourbon.   The color of bourbon is fun to capture.   When it is in the bottle it is dark and light with specks of red but when a small amount is put into a glass it has more yellow and not the dark red depth.

"The Teapot and her friends" 6" x 6" oil

This was a demo that I painted in my Monday painting class.   I forgot to post that night but dreamed all night of tweaking the paint strokes.  So I was hell bent the next morning to change the painting.   So here it is!   I think it is better.   Class, what do you think?

'Bunch of Ladies' 8" x 8" oil

Most of this painting was painting with my glasses off so I could capture the essence of what the flowers looked like.   The only problem with not seeing through my glasses... I can't see how much paint I am getting on my brush!   I guess I can't have it all!

Sneaky Ladies 8" x 6" oil

These flowers always seem to spring up over night without any warning.   I think they should be called Sneaky Ladies.  They could be undercover agents except now we know they are there!  These are always a challenge because on one stem there can be many flowers.  This is only two stems and there are 10 blooms and two buds so tomorrow there will be 12!

"K in bright light" 14" x 11" oil

"Three white Hydrangeas" 8" x 8" oil

Using a copper cup added a new element to this set up.   I call them white hydrangeas but they are really very light green.   The glow that the copper makes in the shadow is fun.   The blue on the flowers is there because of the north light from the windows.  It adds a little something extra.

"Pink and Green Hydrangeas" 8" x 8" oil

The old hydrangea bush out front produced three blooms this year two were about 3" in diameter and the third one was 8"+ in diameter.   It is the largest bloomin bloom I have ever seen!   I painted the first painting with just the one bloom and I am not sure it translates well so I got a few of the light green ones from Trader Joe's.   I wanted to capture the warm pink/red glow in the center when it is lit.     My favorite part is the shadow it cast on the lower left, there are so many colors.

"What are you doing here?" 6in x 6in oil

"Little Red dress" 18in x 14 in oil

What were we thinking?   We had three lights sources on our model today.  It was an overcast day so the studio was just a little dark.   I turned on one track light overhead, then there was north light coming in on that same side then we turned on a soft 60 watt light for a reflected light on the darker side.  We have 5 people around one model so there is not much wiggle room.

"Moroccan Slippers" 6in x 6in oil

Now for something completely different!   I saw these shoes hanging on a friend's wall and I said "Oh, you should paint those."  She brought them to me and said "You paint them." Well, I spent an hour setting it up.   I started with them hanging since I thought they looked so cool when I first saw them.   I tried it with all kinds of backgrounds, tried them alone and with other props, different lighting (changing bulbs in the lights) and finally gave up on that idea and decided to try them on a surface.   I imagined they were on the floor after being worn.  It looked too plain so I went outside and cut off some peony leaves and put that in front of the light so they cast shadows over the shoes.  So if you didn't know what went into this view would you think they were just sitting on the floor of the porch?
