"Little Red dress" 18in x 14 in oil

What were we thinking?   We had three lights sources on our model today.  It was an overcast day so the studio was just a little dark.   I turned on one track light overhead, then there was north light coming in on that same side then we turned on a soft 60 watt light for a reflected light on the darker side.  We have 5 people around one model so there is not much wiggle room.

Blue dress 11" x 14" oil

Trying a new technique today where I put on little dabs of color and leave it without blending.   It is the blending that I have been increasingly getting bored with in my paintings.   I think this is more on the line of what I want to paint lately.    I have been going through a slump in my work.   Nothing satisfies and I have been looking for something that would make it fresh again for me.  I might play around with this for the next few paintings.  Please Click here for pricing information.

This is my new book that has 100 daily paintings.  They are 12 grouped series, ballet shoes, bourbon, cars, cherries, coffee cream & sugar, eyeglasses, flowers, things you eat, silverware, scissors &marbles and a few of my Friday figurative sketches.  There is something that I like in all of them and I hope you do too.   Please click on the book cover to go to MagCloud to view some of the pages.

Awake and asleep 11"x14" oil

We had planned for just Jen posing but that soft cushy dress was just too tempting for Whirly Girl.  She thought it was great fun and stared out at us as if she were smirking.

Under the orange umbrella 11"x14" oil

This lacquered, oriental, paper umbrella I have used many times.   This time we lit it from behind which casts a warm glow on her right side.    I debated wether to include the dark chair back but in the end I thought it separated the umbrella glow and the glow on her shoulder, plus it gives the painting another dark area.   I like the cool north light in contrast with the warm light.

Napping on the sofa 11"x14" oil

I painted this a few weeks ago and was not happy with the color combinations surrounding the figure.   The composition was pleasing to me and I wanted to keep it so I unified the colors by first putting on a glaze using Winsor Newton burnt sienna and ultramarine blue making a dark brown.  Then I made the sofa and pillow the same color.    Now I think it works and saved a painting that I might have wiped off or discarded.

Red Corset 9"x12" oil

Actually this is her pirate outfit but you can't see the bottom half which consisted of a torn shredded skirt.   I liked the way the white shirt turned out.

Jen the redhead 9"x12" oil

In the poses that Jen has done for us in the past few months it seems like she has had her hair up or covered in some way so Friday when she arrived with her hair down I decided to just do a head study. So here is the result of two and a half hours worth of painting.  The last two Fridays I was so unhappy with what I painted that I came home and wiped them off.   I hate when that happens.

Lady Pisemsky 11"x14' oil

Please click here for purchase information.
The model made this costume for a theatre production she was in and uses it in Renaissance fairs.   Her craftsmanship on the costume is very impressive.  There are 5 layers to her costume, eight pieces in all plus the feather fan.   This Russian costume shows how the wealthy dressed in 1580.

Redhead in black 9"x12" oil

Please click here for purchase information.
This was a happy involuntary experiment.  I arrived at the Friday "Go Figure" session without any Gamsol (thinner) so I decided to paint with just paint.   Having no thinner also meant that I could not clean off my brushes in between colors and no wiping off any false starts.   I piled paint on my brushes and forged ahead.   I am happy the way it turned out.    Maybe I will forget my thinner more often.  This is what happens when you have too much time off from painting.

The Masquerader 9"x12" oil

Please click here to view price information.
The model today brought a mask to wear which was great fun to paint.  This is almost a two hour effort.   I am happy with this one.   For once I used enough paint and did not overwork it.

Jen in red 12"x9" oil

Sold
It certainly has been a while since my last post.   I feel like I am on vacation except for the fact that I have been working, but not on daily paintings.   I have been sewing bags, clothing and I made a fabulous hat with beading.   But I digress.   I painted this last Friday but forgot to post until now!   That should tell you where my head has been... in the dark under a hat!   Jen is a new model for our Friday "Go Figure" group and she came with her own outfit!   Which we loved!   I concentrated on painting in the focus area with the outlying areas just hinted at.  I am happy with this one.
