"Napoleon meets Kirstyn" 20in x 16in. oil

This model showed up today wearing an outfit that looked like a revolutionary soldier and was wearing a hat like Napoleon.   We loved it!   I am not sure he would have glasses but I liked the way she looked so I went with it.    Her clothing was more of a brown/black combination but I thought a little color was called for.

"Hat from Mali" 16in x 12in oil

I've had this hat for about 40 years, can't remember where I got it but it's construction is so interesting and it is pretty comfortable to wear.   It came from Mali.  If I went there today, would I see people wearing it?

"Dude in a hat" 11in x 14in oil

Someone brought a hat today, when he put it on he decided he looked good in the hat.

I started this 3 hour sketch with a very loose gesture drawing using paynes grey, covering all the shadow areas.   It made for a quick map to show where the light and dark areas were.  All this was done in the first 15 minutes.  That left the rest of the time to play with color/value.

"Hannah in a hat" 16" x 20" oil on linen

This was a 3 hour pose.  I wanted to keep it loose and free flowing.  She is a wonderful model.

"Velvet trimmed hat" 14" x 11" oil

The warm skin tone in contrast to the cool background is my favorite part of this sketch.   The background color I put on about three weeks ago with Gamblin Fast Matte colors.   It was a blend of burnt sienna, dioxazine purple, indian yellow, cad red light and ultramarine blue with a little quick dry white.   They have a matte finish and dry fast so they are good to put over an oil primed linen.

Lazy afternoon 11x14 oil

The glow or rather the reflected light on her face and neck in this photograph of the painting is too much the same color of orange.   On the painting it has more subtle changes.   I used numerous light source settings but I find that reds do not photograph well.   Please let me know your suggestions on how to photograph reds.

Large hat 9"x12" oil

This was my third attempt at painting this pose.   Within the first 30 minutes I started over three times.  The model had dreadlocks so the hat does not fit exactly right but she looked great, I love the way the hat grazes the top of her head.  My favorite parts that I savored until the last were her hands.  I love to paint or draw hands.   The focus was on her head and neck so the simple or lack of detail and darkness on the lower arms are intentional.
