"Hannah in a hat" 16" x 20" oil on linen

This was a 3 hour pose.  I wanted to keep it loose and free flowing.  She is a wonderful model.

Chinese coat 11"x14" oil

This coat never looked so good as it does when Hannah wears it.   So not to overwork it, I did not put any detail on the eyes and I think it looks better that way.

Prim but not proper. 16"x20" oil

This was so much fun to paint!  I had this girly prom like dress in a cool shade of lilac silk and I thought long white gloves would really make the look but I had to really hunt to remember where I put them.    Takes me back to my fashion illustration days.

Golden Haze 11"x14" oil

About 15 years ago I made a floor screen with a painting of Pointe Vecchio in a 1930's deco style of painting and on the back side I covered it in gold leaf, well not actual gold leaf but that composite gold leaf.   I decided to use that  as a back drop for this painting.  It really glows when the light hits it.   It was fun for a change.

Announcement:  I have two figurative paintings in a show that is opening 6-9 this Friday September 6.   Click here for more information.   It will be at the PUBLIC, 131 W Main St, Louisville KY.   If you are in the area  please stop by.

Hannah's new hairdo 11"x14" oil

Before this new hairdo Hannah had dreadlocks.  We loved her old hair and we love her new hair...  We just like her any way her hair looks.

Hannah in blue 19"x25" pastel

I have been wanting to do a drawing for the past month so today when the model showed up I decided to do a pastel which I consider drawing in color.   It is much larger than what I usually do on Fridays.   It was fun and my favorite part was her hair.

Large hat 9"x12" oil

This was my third attempt at painting this pose.   Within the first 30 minutes I started over three times.  The model had dreadlocks so the hat does not fit exactly right but she looked great, I love the way the hat grazes the top of her head.  My favorite parts that I savored until the last were her hands.  I love to paint or draw hands.   The focus was on her head and neck so the simple or lack of detail and darkness on the lower arms are intentional.

Skin color 9"x12" oil

At first when Hannah showed up with this silk chiffon blouse I thought it was not very interesting but when she put it on it was a lovely color and I loved the way she wore it.    The color of the blouse and her skin are similar with small variations.

Green taffeta dress 11"x14" oil

This green dress is woven with two colors, the warp is violet blue and the weft is lime green so the fabric takes on an iridescent quality and changes color as she moves.   It makes for fun painting, thank goodness she was holding still!  I have tried to keep the focus on the head and shoulders and trying to keep the rest loose and move the colors around the canvas.
The three hour session goes way too fast and with the model breaks it is more like two and a half hours.   I had to keep from panicking at the end.

Hannah seated 9"x12" oil

Hannah always poses so elegantly.  I struggled with this one trying to get a balance between cool and warm and not get to buried in detail.

H.K. in an asian dress 9"x12" oil

Please click here to view purchase information.
I paint with a limited palette and when she showed up with this fabulous silk dress the two reds I had did not capture the color.   I had Cad. Red light and Alizarin Crimson and I needed Quinacridone Red so I added that when I got home.

Hannah in red velvet 9"x12" oil

Doesn't Hannah look good in this red velvet dress!  This was fun to paint, I believe it was a combination of the dress along with the elegance of the pose.
