"Sugar in your tea?" 6in x 6in oil on panel

Polished my sugar bowl the other day so I thought I had better use it before it tarnishes again.  I like the way the shadows hold the composition together.

Thank you for viewing my art.   Sold.

Two lumps please! 6" x 6" Oil

These sugar cubes remind me of a by gone era when sugar was measured in cubes for your sugar or coffee.   However, when I grew up no one sweetened their coffee everyone drank it black, which is the way I like it, but I love the idea of the cubes.

Coffee, cream & sugar. 6" x 6". oil

This is another painting that I neglected to post.   I love the bold color and simple strong graphic feel. Maybe I should have called it "Coffee for One".

"Brewed Tea" 6" x 6" oil

I tried to be looser on this one.  Thought it would be a good idea to use the same items  but in a different layout.   Well, as you probably noticed, a spoon got in on the act.

"A Pot of Tea" 6" x 6" oil

Thought I would dip myself into this pot of tea today.   I felt like I had never painted before!   How frustrating!   But I think I pulled it off in the end.  Now that I am looking at it I see that there is no signature.

Thank you for viewing my art.

Sweet sunny coffee 8"x8" oil

I can't believe it has been almost a month since I painted a still life!   Life has certainly interrupted my schedule.   It is so hard to get every thing done when your second in command does not pull their weight!     I am going to have to have a heart to heart talk with my Shih Tzu, Whirly Girl, because she is clearly taking too many naps.
I could certainly tell that I am rusty.   Making this an 8x8 instead of a 6x6 changed it some but I just used bigger brushes.

Sugar Sugar Teapot 18" x 18" oil

My painting style has changed over the course the last 4 years, in fact it has changed in the last year.   When I recently looked at this painting from a year ago I was not happy with it so I repainted it to reflect my current painting style.

Tea, one sugar 6"x6" oil

The Dali Lama was here in Louisville speaking and teaching for several days.  He is such a delightful and happy man full of insights and common sense.   I was only one in the 14,000 that came to hear him speak.   Louisville has taken on the challenge of "Compassion".    I have been practicing it as I drive.... did I hear some sniggering!   some laughter!   Well, you have to start somewhere and that is where I have the least amount of it, and I tell you it is working... most of the time.   I am a new woman... who has forgotten how to paint!   Here is my struggle for today.

Tea with two cubes 6"x6" oil

Today I decided to make the cubes whiter than the white tablecloth.  I like the way they pop out.

Black with sugar 6"x6" oil

Looking almost straight down on a subject is fun for me however it does pose problems in painting the set up.    In order to have this view the table with the objects needs to be right in front of me so I can then look down on the objects which means that the easel and the panel I am painting on is at arms length.    I have been trying to be more painterly in my approach but I could not decide where to mess up the brush strokes so I left it as is.   I did do a couple of small messy strokes.

One lump or two? 6"x6" oil

Sold
Looking straight down on a set up is one of my favorite vantage points.   I put a small table right in front of my easel, set it up and there it is!  Voila!   My favorite part beside the fact the vantage point is red reflections on the objects around the red pot.

Red teapot 6"x6" oil

Sold
Over the years people have been giving me paint that they find in a yard sale or paint that someone left behind so I have accumulated quite a bit of paint.   Since I use a limited palette there are quite a number of colors that I might never use.   Today I was thinking about what red I will use so I got out all my paint and American Vermilion.   I wonder why they call it American??

Sugar or Cream? 6"x6" oil

Sold

Sugar cubes are so much fun to paint.   Personally I like my coffee black but love the images and rituals of sugar and cream.    The shadow made by the sugar bowl looks like big ears.  Love that!

This is another gallery piece that I painted today.  I try to keep these alla prima, painting them in one sitting so it retains it's freshness and plus I have really grown to love painting wet into wet.

I am just going to have to think of something else to paint.   Even I am getting a little tired of this sugar bowl.    I do have a series in mind that I want to start but first have to gather the items.
