"Hydrangeas in Bloom" 8in x 8in. oil

My hydrangeas bloomed big time this year after having some sort of bug or fungus for the last 2 years.   At first I thought it was the hard freeze but last year I realized that it might come back if I whacked it all down and let it grow anew.   And it seemed to work!   Yea!

"Sunflowers" 12" x 12". oil

Sunflowers just make you smile!   It is partly because of the sunny color, part because of the large dark center with the whimsical petals radiating out and because they have a mind of their own when it comes to arranging them in a vase!!    Maybe I should put a smiley face in the middle of that big one...

This is painted on a larger canvas, 12" square, (the size of 4 - 6" square paintings)

"Christmas Bouquet". 12" x 12" oil

A very good friend gave me the gift of flowers delivered to me for three months!   

What a wonderful treat!    So I decided to paint them and here is the first with all it's Christmas colors.

I am a little rusty because I have not painted very much this year.    A lot of time was available but I chose to do other things.  The main thing is that I am happy and healthy.   

I took this picture with my phone, usually I use my digital Canon but I have not been able to locate my camera for 9 months!!    I have looked everywhere, probably an equivalent of 2 days.   It must have dissolved into dust and I have vacuumed it up.  I am going to forget about it and maybe it will turn up.

Christmas was solitary for me, streamed lots of movies, cooked and baked.

I hope all of you had a good holiday and that you have a nice New Year to come.

"Pink Daisies" 8" x 8" Oil

These daisies are so happy in the green blown glass vase.   I just could not squeeze all these on a 6x6 inch canvas.    I am going to offer it at a 6x6" price though!

"Peony Duo" 8in x 8in oil

Working on my larger paintings for my solo show leaves little time for my daily paintings which are valuable in keeping my paintings fresh.  Finding these beautiful peonies at Trader Joe's gave me the longing to paint a daily.

"Roses and Ribbon 3" 8" x 8" oil

I feel that the roses came out pretty well in this painting.    They are in a silver mint julep cup and almost everyone here in Louisville Ky has one of these.   Mine came from my Dad and his initials are engraved on the cup.    I added a woven copper ribbon in the composition... it needed somehting...

Fallen leaf 8" x 10" oil

It was a struggle painting this one today.   At first I could not get a good composition on a square format so I went with an 8x10.   The surface was a slick masonite panel with a layer of very smooth almost shiny gesso.   So at first the paint was slick and showed the brush marks.   After I had blocked in basic color/value everywhere it was time for lunch.   That was the best thing because that allowed time for the paint to soak in a bit and when I came back from lunch it was easier to paint on.   Next time I will put on a layer of grey acrylic before painting.

"Red roses with a Copper Ribbon" 8" x 8" oil

As long as the roses last I feel I must paint them.   Here they are  with a copper mesh ribbon.  I painted it on a larger canvas which gave me more freedom of movement using larger brushes.

Finally had time to get in a daily today.  One of my students left these roses for me to paint so I gave it a try today.   Roses in a Mint Julep cup is a classic image here in the city that has the Derby.

"White Hydrangeas with a Red Daisy" 8" x 8" oil

Yesterday I set out to paint two small paintings.   I painted one and wiped it off, then I painted the second one and wiped it off too!   Yikes!   Today I started with a new approach and I liked the way this one turned out... finally!

'Bunch of Ladies' 8" x 8" oil

Most of this painting was painting with my glasses off so I could capture the essence of what the flowers looked like.   The only problem with not seeing through my glasses... I can't see how much paint I am getting on my brush!   I guess I can't have it all!

Sneaky Ladies 8" x 6" oil

These flowers always seem to spring up over night without any warning.   I think they should be called Sneaky Ladies.  They could be undercover agents except now we know they are there!  These are always a challenge because on one stem there can be many flowers.  This is only two stems and there are 10 blooms and two buds so tomorrow there will be 12!

"Two Peonies" 8in x 8in oil

These are the last of the Peonies.   They don't last long enough.   I am still working on making my brushstrokes looser.    There are so many petals on these flowers and I probably painted one tenth of them.   I am happy with the vase and reflection.

"Five Peonies" 8in x 8in oil

 I love the subtle color shifts on these peonies that I found at Trader Joe's.    Tonight I was almost ready to turn the lights out and fall asleep but I remembered that I had not posted this painting.  So now I am up way past my bedtime!

"Lilacs in a vase" 8x8 in Oil painting

Having these lilacs in the house makes me want a lilac bush in my yard.  The flowers are small and when I took off my glasses to paint them all the pink ran together.

"Three Iris" 6x6 in oil painting

There are so few flowers in my garden that I feel I must paint the ones I have.    In this painting I tried to paint the different values of the iris color trying not to paint every detail.   I feel that I am still learning to paint.    Thank you for watching my art.
