Andre G 11"x14" oil

I really like the way this one turned out even though it has taken a week to post.   Doesn't he look great in the kimono!  It suits him perfectly.

Golden Haze 11"x14" oil

About 15 years ago I made a floor screen with a painting of Pointe Vecchio in a 1930's deco style of painting and on the back side I covered it in gold leaf, well not actual gold leaf but that composite gold leaf.   I decided to use that  as a back drop for this painting.  It really glows when the light hits it.   It was fun for a change.

Announcement:  I have two figurative paintings in a show that is opening 6-9 this Friday September 6.   Click here for more information.   It will be at the PUBLIC, 131 W Main St, Louisville KY.   If you are in the area  please stop by.

Itty Bitty grapes 6"x6" oil

These itty bitty grapes are actually called Champagne grapes but that did not sound as fun as itty bitty.  I love the way the light glows through the tiny little orbs.  They taste very sweet!

Working a crossword puzzle 18"x18" oil on wood

You will notice that this is a larger piece, 18" square and it is painted on a cradled wood panel.   This is part of my series of larger works that are to go to a gallery.   Haven't selected the gallery yet but I am having fun working on the pieces!

1951 Henry J 5"x7" oil

Yes, it is that time of year when when the "Street Rod National Show" was here in Louisville this past weekend with over 11,000 cars to dazzle the imagination.   I love seeing these cars drive around town.

This 1951 Henry J was here from Alabama and I could not resist it.   I am in love with the grill!  And as you can see the engine is more than a 4 cylinder.

The Henry J was built by the American company Kaiser-Frazer Corp. and named after the Chairman, Henry J Kaiser.  The first year they were built, 1950 (that is the year I was built too!) they had 6 cylinders and they began 4-cylinder models in 1951. The company quit producing in 1954.   Read about the car's brief history and interesting facts here.

Reclining nude in green 14"x18" oil

With this painting we had her pose twice for a total of 6 hours which included breaks and setting it up.  Everything I have done of late has been alla prima, (painting wet into wet paint or all in one sitting) so it was a challenge to paint on it the second time on top of dry paint!   We had a warm yellowish bulb above her and north light coming in through the window at her feet which made for some interesting contrasting light.   I loved the foreshortening, one of my favorite things to do because of the challenge, I think.

Speech! Speech! 6"x6" oil

After all that excitement about grapes I decided to paint cherries today!  I am so fickle.   But the cherries were excited to be out and about!   When the bravest one jumped on the podium the others demanded he give a speech except for one shy one that hid behind the cup.

Green grapes 6"x6" oil

It felt good today to be painting again.   I had to take some time off to regroup.  I have had my shower re-done (because of problems) and I did not realize that not having any place to bathe would be so disruptive.  It has taken two months to get a new one put in.   The tile is fabulous and I can't wait for the glass wall and door to be installed!   Thank goodness I have a gym membership and can shower there!

Oh sunny day! 6"x6" oil

Finally we had a sunny day!   Yea!!  You know folks, I have lost my Muse.   Yes, it has been serious.   I have not been inspired to paint anything for the past 6 weeks.   And when I paint it is a struggle.   However, today one of my students brought in some sunflowers to paint and they looked so fabulous I decided to paint them.   So here is my effort.  I must say that my students did a fabulous job on their paintings of sunflowers!

Statue of Pan 8"x8" oil

This statue of Pan towers above Hogan's Fountain in the heart of Cherokee Park luring thirsty travelers (especially the dogs) to the cascading springs below him. It was sculpted in 1905 by a local artist, Enid Yandell, who also sculpted the famous Daniel Boone statue in another nearby park.

Ali's crowning glory 12"x18" pastel

Ali, our model last friday, has been living in Hawaii for the past year and we were lucky enough to have her pose for us before she goes back.   Her hair used to be all dreadlocks but now most of the dreadlocks are in the back.   She has tons of hair!

Study in blue 8"x8" oil

This painting was my demo this morning for my Monday students so I painted it on a larger panel to make it easier to see.   I chose these three Hydrangeas that one of my students brought because of their blueish colors.   Put them in a blue bottle and the shadow is blue because of the reflection of the sky in the north light.

Four hands 6"x6" oil

Sold
Every Sunday Daily Paintworks posts a weekly challenge.   This week is my challenge on that site, click here for this information.
The challenge is to paint the hands simply. Capture the gesture in a painted sketch, paint in the dark values then add the light. Squint your eyes as you look at the hands to see the difference between the light and shadow areas. Keep those values as you paint the correct cool or warm "value colors". Painting in the overall hand shape to start helps to keep it in the correct proportion. Here are 4 hands to be painted on a 6"x6" panel making each hand fit roughly in a 3"x3" square.

D in her favorite dress 9"x12" oil

I worked all day yesterday trying to get my new email account to work.  Finally had a genius at the Apple store to do it.   Those geniuses are so clever!
The focus is her hair so I painted the rest softer.   I believe the color comes out better in a larger picture.

Pinky 6"x6" oil

My pink Hydrangeas are blooming!   There are never very many blooms because the previous owners planted it in the shady the north side of the house, but this year I really will only have about 7 blooms.  Darn!  When painting this pink and trying to get a bright pink I had to get out a tube of Quinacridone red which is not made from a mineral and therefore when you mix it with white it is brighter or rather a more clear pink.   For instance when you mix white with Alizarin Crimson it is pink but it is a grayer pink because it is from a mineral.   I find that many flower colors like Gerber Daisies are bright and you need to use modern colors like thalo and colors that are not mineral.  That is all I know for today!
