A mess of berries 6"x6" oil

Sold
I painted this on Monday but it was too dark to photograph by the time I had finished so I could not post.  How did all those berries get out of the bowl?

Berries 'n cream 6"x6" oil

Sold
About half way through I started getting discouraged and had to step away.   After returning I carried on and was happily painting away when I noticed I was eating the berries!   This is what happens when your still life is within reach and in this case it was right below my easel.   I slapped my self on my wrist and told myself that I would have to wait until the painting is done.    That was an incentive to finish.

One lump or two? 6"x6" oil

Sold
Looking straight down on a set up is one of my favorite vantage points.   I put a small table right in front of my easel, set it up and there it is!  Voila!   My favorite part beside the fact the vantage point is red reflections on the objects around the red pot.

One for tea 6"x6" oil

Sold
I struggle to keep it from being perfect and nit-picky.  My favorite parts on this set up are the reflected lights in the shadows.   To me the discovery of painting wet into wet and being able to manipulate the paint and edges is what it is about.   At least this is where I am at in my art path.

Gyspy wagon 6"x8" oil

Please click here for purchase information.
While going through some old photos I came across this photo I took in New Mexico.   It reminded me of a gypsy wagon I saw while traveling in Ireland.   I wonder who had it and how they used it.

Red teapot 6"x6" oil

Sold
Over the years people have been giving me paint that they find in a yard sale or paint that someone left behind so I have accumulated quite a bit of paint.   Since I use a limited palette there are quite a number of colors that I might never use.   Today I was thinking about what red I will use so I got out all my paint and American Vermilion.   I wonder why they call it American??

Sugar or Cream? 6"x6" oil

Sold

Sugar cubes are so much fun to paint.   Personally I like my coffee black but love the images and rituals of sugar and cream.    The shadow made by the sugar bowl looks like big ears.  Love that!

Blues n greens 6"x6" oil

Please click here for purchase information.
A decision was made today to get back to painting more often.   The break has been nice and I feel energized and ready to start a new round of painting.   Here was my first attempt and I feel a little rusty and first thought that I had forgotten how to paint but it all came back to me.   Almost like riding a bike without the danger of falling off.

H.K. in an asian dress 9"x12" oil

Please click here to view purchase information.
I paint with a limited palette and when she showed up with this fabulous silk dress the two reds I had did not capture the color.   I had Cad. Red light and Alizarin Crimson and I needed Quinacridone Red so I added that when I got home.

Redhead in black 9"x12" oil

Please click here for purchase information.
This was a happy involuntary experiment.  I arrived at the Friday "Go Figure" session without any Gamsol (thinner) so I decided to paint with just paint.   Having no thinner also meant that I could not clean off my brushes in between colors and no wiping off any false starts.   I piled paint on my brushes and forged ahead.   I am happy the way it turned out.    Maybe I will forget my thinner more often.  This is what happens when you have too much time off from painting.

Shaker Village is an historic site here in Kentucky.   It is one of America's largest restored community which has 34 restored buildings and 3,000 acres of preserved farmland.   It also has more than 25 miles of stone walls that were made up of local limestone.  Irish imagrants started the walls and passed their craft on to black slaves who became masters at building the rock walls.   Only 5 or 10% of these 19th century dry stone walls exhist today.  Click here for more information.

We have always know her as Kelly which we found out was her middle name and her first name is Victoria.  So in the southern tradition of using two names she is now Victoria Kelly.    Today, as a challenge we had V.K. leave her glasses on.   I rather like it!

Saint-Paul asylum in Saint Remy France 8"x10" oil

Sold
Saint-Paul Asylum is where Vincent Van Gogh stayed for a year from May 1889-May 1890 as a self-admitted patient.   During much of his stay he was confined to the grounds where he made paintings of the garden, olive trees, views from his window and of course the irises.   I took this reference photo when I visited in 2007.

Eleven year old Maddie is the granddaughter of a woman who paints with us on Friday.  She wanted to pose for our Friday group and had to wait until she had a day off from school.    She has been practicing for weeks and I must say she was a very good model!   All her practice paid off.

Bernheim small batch 6"x6" oil

Please click here to view auction information.
I like this painting because of the straight on angle of the bottle and the small shot glass on the one third line.

Bernheim is made at Heaven Hill Distilleries in Bardstown Kentucky is the only type of straight whiskey which uses predominately soft winter wheat and is produced in small batches and aged to perfection.  It is not really a bourbon since it is at least 51% wheat.   To qualify as bourbon, the law stipulates that it must be made in the USA, at least 51% and no more than 79% Indian corn and aged for at least two years.   It is a nice smooth tasting whiskey.

Liz with red top 8"x8" oil

The challenge for me this day was to create an interesting layout keeping it simple and direct.  With her arm outstretched I wanted to include it so it made sense to put her head in the right 1/3.   I had taken a square canvas so I was locked into that shape.
