Ballet shoe sole 8"x8" oil

It is amazing to me that they don't wear these shoes very many times and they have to put so much work into them before they wear them like roughing up the leather sole and sewing on all the ribbons and elastic.    I cannot imagine wearing them.   You can give someone a concussion with the toe of the shoe.

One Hung Shoe 8"x8" oil

After saying it out loud the title sounds like a dish from chinese takeout or maybe I just sneezed.   Anyway...  every time I start one of these ballet shoe paintings I feel uncomfortable and think that this time I have really more than I can handle.   But before you know it two hours have passed and it is done.   Sometimes getting into that uncomfortable zone is a good thing!

Two ballet shoes 8"x8" oil

I love all these paintings of ballet shoes... my favorite part on this one is the shoe in the back, the glow on the inside and the shadow it makes on the wall.    The shadows are an important part of my 

compositions... on all my paintings.

One and a half ballet shoes 8" x 8" oil

When I decided to paint more than one shoe the 8" square seemed to work best.   Painting looser is something I have been trying to do.   Losing edges is a goal also.   After taking this long break from painting my perspective seems different also.

Ballet shoe ll 6"x6" oil

I cannot imagine wearing these shoes, not even for a minute.  A couple of ballerinas in Louisville donated these shoes to me a number of years ago for some paintings I was working on.   I love the image of the shoes not the pain of wearing them... not that I wore them.   I did take tap lessons... actually roller skating was more my thing.   Flying down the asphalt street with the clip on skates making sparks as I flew.  But I digress.   For these shoe paintings I have added a few other tube colors. John Howard Sanden's Pro Mix color system for portrait and figure painting.   I do not use them in my portraits, they don't really work for me, but they are the perfect colors for these ballet shoes.

Ballet shoe, 6 in x 6 in oil

I discovered my pile of ballet toe shoes and thought they might make good paintings.   I am working on keeping the painting loose.   The shoes are pink but they have a lot of grey in the color.   The ribbons may have been pink at one time but are faded a bit so they are more yellowish.  It is cosy to be painting inside while it is snowy, icy and freezing outside!   Today there is a covering if ice on everything!

Study in Blue 6"x6" oil

Again following Liz Wiltzen's ideas on color/value studies here is my study in Blue.   It was a little tricky.   I used blues in a range from turquoise to bordering on violet.  My palette was titanium white, cadmium yellow medium, cadmium red light, alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue, thalo blue, thalo turquoise and burnt sienna.  After it dries I will try to photograph it again because the dark areas when wet catch so much glare.

Study in Yellow 6"x6" oil

This one was hard!   I started on it yesterday and worked on and off all day and by 4:00 the light was gone, time to quit.   Worked on it this morning and finished it finally!!   This took way too long but I think in the end it worked out right.   The photo here did not capture the right shades of yellow but I am so over it!!   I really should do a painting in blue so I at least have one of every primary color.   These would look so cool all together in a grouping!   Thank you Liz Wiltzen for coming up with this exercise!  The large pepper was the hardest for me because of all the fussy shapes around the stem.   My palette was: Titanium white, Cad. lemon yellow, Cad. yellow med, Cad. red light, Ultramarine blue, Thalo blue, Winsor Newton Bt. sienna

Study in Green 6"x6" oil

Here is the second one in my Study of Color series.   Inspired by Liz Wiltzen's blog post about using vivid color to flex your value muscle, I painted a second one using all green.    The palette I used was Titanium white, lemon yellow, Cad yellow medium,  Cad red light, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine blue, Thalo blue and Burnt Sienna (Winsor Newton).   I believe you can achieve great greens by mixing from yellows and blues and in fact get a better variety.   However looking at this now it looks like I used sap green... go figure.

On the left is a b&w photo of the painting and on the right is the b&w photo of the setup.   So you can see the comparison.

Study in Red 6"x6" oil

Through out the holidays I have been thinking about an exercise that Liz Wiltzen wrote about in her blog about "Using vivid color to flex your value muscle".   It is a very helpful exercise to work on getting your values correct.    Check out her exercise here.   In order to get the red dark enough in the shadow sides you need to mix your red with a blue or green.   Just using a darker red will not work.  Here is the photo of it in black and white to make sure the values are where they need to be.

Daisies in a huddle 8"x8" oil

If they are in a huddle why are they all  facing out?    Are they looking out for the other team?   I think because I have not painted on a regular basis I have forgotten how.   I seem to have pickitus.  But you have to start somewhere!   For the last two months I have rehabbed my living room.  Scraping, puttying, caulking, priming, putting up wood trim, and painting horizontal stripes on the walls.   After 14 years it is time for a change

History reading 9"x12" oil on canvas

When working with a busy, colorful subject I like to create color harmony by using the color palette all over, meaning that what colors are in the subject I also put in the background and when a different color is in the background I like to put it in other areas and also on the subject in some way.

The Emu Dress 14"x16" pastel on paper

When Liz showed up I asked her to choose something out of the costume closet.   I think she chose well.   It was a challenge to paint all of the dark and make them distinct as well as loose.   Another challenge was the warm light on one side and the cool north light on the other.

Napping 6"x6" oil

Red and Orange were exhausted from all the days activity so they decided to just be still for a little nap. This is my fourth painting for DPW's Weekly Challenge.   So now I can post them on the site.   It was good for me especially since I have not been painting as often.   I felt with each painting that I was starting from scratch and had forgotten how to paint!   I feel that these four paintings are a little different style than my usual of late.

Don't look! 6" x 6" oil

Orange did not want Red to see how clumsy he was so he told Red not to look while he climbed in the cup.   This is the third painting for DPW's Weekly Challenge.  It is the 4 in 4 challenge, I misread the instructions and thought it was 4 paintings using the same 4 objects, quite similar to how I do my series, but nooooo, when I read it again after painting my first two I noticed it was supposed to be a cup (or object of choice) and 3 different  colored pieces of paper.    Oh well!   I decided to continue with what I had started.   Sorry Carol!

These two decided to play hide and seek.   Red doesn't think Orange will find him, what do you think?

I painted this to enter into Daily Paintworks Challenge for the week.  This is the first of four paintings with four objects.   Ok... I did not read the fine print before I started and it is supposed to be an object with four pieces of colored paper.  Well, I am close.   I painted four objects, a cup, two peppers and blue paper. Since I have painted two paintings with these objects I am going to continue with that theme.

Dreaming of travel 18" x 18" oil on wood

This is a larger work, 18" x 18" on wood with 1.5"wood sides that are painted also.   I think of my daily small paintings as sketches and I believe some of them will work well in larger formats.   The compass is from my childhood when I would go to camp and we were required to bring our own compass.   I have no idea why I put the marble there... maybe subconsciously as a rolling stone.

Prim but not proper. 16"x20" oil

This was so much fun to paint!  I had this girly prom like dress in a cool shade of lilac silk and I thought long white gloves would really make the look but I had to really hunt to remember where I put them.    Takes me back to my fashion illustration days.

Falling asleep while knitting 16"x20" oil
