"Bowled over" 6"x6" oil on Ampersand Gessoboard

Available for $100, contact me.

Decided to do these apples before I ate all of them.  The shadow side of the apples has some green and blue along with the red.   If you use just dark red the color value will not be dark enough.

Yesterday was around 76 and today it is 83, WOW!    I had spring fever yesterday and just could not tie myself down to paint a daily.   Instead I did something much more fun, I cleaned my desk and then went outside and cleaned my patio.  It is so beautiful, the Tulip trees, Plum trees and Redbuds are all in bloom, the birds are singing and Derby is one month away!

"An Apple a Day" 6"x6", oil on canvas

Available for $100, contact me.

The clock face I knew was going to be hard but it wasn't the numbers, it was getting the color right.   It had both the orange and blue in it and it was light with shadows and highlights.  Orange and blue are opposites so it ends up being a grey.  At first I had it too dark but as the day progressed it the light on it became lighter and that worked out better.

"Lipstick Mystery solved" 6"x6" oil on canvas

SOLD
Here are the mystery items.   Lipsticks.  A few of you figured it out and I know some of you are still struggling.   Congratulations to those of you who figured it out and I'm sorry I don't have a prize.   I had a few who knew what it was right away. The round ones are different brands but the square ones are Chanel. I loved doing these because of the spots of pink, orange and red shades and also the shiny spots.   The color looks better in person, there is more subtlety in the lipstick shades.

"Stand up straight!" 6" x 6" oil on canvas

Sold
Silly me!  I thought my little clues yesterday were making it quite obvious what these are.  Some of the feed back included bottles, rings, buttons, perfume, makeup, light bulbs and salt cellars.    One person guessed right maybe many others did too but did not contact me.   I'm giving you one more chance and then tomorrow I will reveal in another painting what they are.   I like the out of focus abstract quality.

"Intermission" 6"x6" oil on canvas

Sold
They came into the house one at a time,
and very certainly are a favorite of mine.
Staying at home in a drawer out of sight,
until one is asked to go out for the night.

I have a large version of this painting in my bedroom that is about 4' square that I absolutely love.   Can you guess what they are?

"All in black" 5"x7" pastel

Available for $150, contact me.

This pastel is on Ampersand Pastel Board, and I must say that it really grabs the pastel and allows multiple layers to build up.   This is small, 5"x7", so it was a little tricky to get that wide pastel to make any details but the surface takes more pastel to hide mistakes!

I worked on these round shapes.  It fooled me, I thought they were almost round but when I checked it through an ellipse guide they were a 55 degree ellipse.  (what ever that means)

"The Clipon Invasion" 6" x 6" oil on canvas

Sold

They walked like zombies through the studio, not listening to anyone or seeing anyone.  They moved silently though the night only to appear on the desk the next day.   The person who always seemed to be in the studio was puzzled, "Where did they come from? and How did they get here?"   "Funny, I didn't see them yesterday!"

"Hindsight" 6"x6" oil on canvas

Sold

It is so good to be back in the studio painting my daily ones!  After I came home from teaching and had lunch, I procrastinated (this is one of my skills) by cleaning and reading an art magazine but around 2:30 I decided to jump in and JUST DO THE WORK!  I was a bit nervous about what was going to come off my brushes so I decided to paint a subject that excites me.

"In disguise" 30" x 40" oil on canvas

SOLD
This painting was in my "Monsters in my closet" series. Thought I'd include it today since I was reminded of it by a good friend this morning.  Getting ready for the Kentuckiana Cluster Dog Show and taxes have been my main focus for the last 5 days.   We are setting up the booth tomorrow afternoon for the dog show.    I plan to start my daily paintings up next week when all this is over.  Thank ya'll for being so patient and understanding.

"Before & After" 6"x6" oil on canvas

Sold
This is a tall bottle of oil that I've been wanting to paint but it is so tall I thought I could not get it on the small 6"x6" canvas until today when I thought, AH HA!   I can look down on it from above.   The jar of olives was tall and thin also so I put them in a small round jar for contrast.

"Oh, Balls!" 6"x6" oil on canvas

Sold
Lately I've been trying to find a place between precision and painterly with my painting style.  I got out numerous objects today but gravitated toward these pool balls.   I find these soothing for some reason.  I found them in a thrift store a few years back.  They're a little nicked and the white of the balls are quite yellowed.   I love the sound they make when they click together.

Here is my little family of hammers.   We are all related.   The last Figure class was last night and it was lots of fun, we concentrated on long poses.   I know that Louisville Visual Art Association will have me teach another one.  Everyone did very well and had definite improvement over the course of 8 classes.  All of you were such hard workers!

"White coffee" 5"x7" oil on canvas

Sold
Thought I'd do whites again.   The only thing that is pure white is the highlight on the top surface of the marble and a highlight on the cup handle.    The white tablecloth has some orange and pink, and there is some yellow ochre in the reflected light areas.    I couldn't resist putting white cream in the coffee.  Yum!

"White out" 6"x6" oil on canvas

Available for $100, contact me.

Well I rushed through this one today and it shows.   My goal here was to do something simple and work on white things.  The reflections of the light source on the bowl and bulb are the whitest things on the canvas. The white fabric seemed very bright and I think I got it too bright.  Well tomorrow is another day!

"Boxer" 12"x12" oil on canvas

Available for $275, contact me.
This painting is larger, a 12"x12" museum wrapped canvas, painted on all sides.  Of course it has taken me longer to do this one.   At first glance it looks like you can use yellow ochre and Winsor Newton burnt sienna to get his color, but noooo!   Beside those two colors I had to get out Holbein mars yellow, Holbein yellow grey, Winsor Newton raw sienna, made a dark brown and black mixtures with ultramarine blue and  WN burnt sienna.   I had paint mixtures all over my palette.  But I think it worked.

"Club Social" 5"x7" oil on canvas

Sold

These roses still look good after purchasing them 10 days ago.   I decided to show them in the glass vase I've have them in.   Here I'm attempting to paint them with loose brushwork.  In order to do this I removed my glasses and this captures pretty well what I saw.   I went for color value and no detail.   Maybe if you remove your glasses it will look good to you too!

Found these two in my tool box the other day.  I love painting tools and probably have enough to last me my lifetime.  I chose this orange background because the turquoise blue handles pop out.  The father is showing his son how to hold the marble gently but firmly.

"Bud & Rosie have a tiff" 5"x7" oil on canvas

Sold

Due to a snow fall during the night, I cancelled my class this morning.   You know how some days the painting comes so easily and other days.....this was one of those days.   Setting up took me about 1.5 hours.   Couldn't decide what to paint, nothing excited me.   The roses still looked pretty good so I worked on that.   It was a comedy of errors getting everything right.   My canvas fell to  the floor twice and I accidently touched the rose and it flipped into the air and landed on the floor next to my canvas.  Ready to paint and my easel slipped down 2", by the time I was set up I was thinking I should be done by now.   Started out with high hopes, was going to keep it loose and free.  Towards the end I think I had a few strokes too many.   Although the values look right when I take my glasses off.

"Rosy Morning" 6"x6" oil on canvas

Sold
The roses are holding up very well, so I thought I'd do another.  To talk a bit about the composition a minute, the top side of the cup handle where it is attached to the cup is lined up on the 1/3 over - 1/3 down mark and the center of the rose where all the petals come together is on the 2/3 over - 2/3 down mark.   I tried the flower in different positions and finally came up with this solution and I think it balances nicely.  Of course there would be many other composition solutions but this is the one I chose (and I'm sticking to it!)

"Rosy future" 6"x6" oil on canvas

Sold
I went to the grocery on Monday to get food before the snow came and as I passed by the flowers I noticed these "Garden Roses" (obvious name) and they were so beautiful I thought I could try and paint them.  Brought them home and put them in the refrigerator.   I was thinking that I was really smart in doing so until I saw them this morning and realized that not only did I forget they were in there I also noticed that I did not put them in water.   Fortunately they were in good condition.  I think I recorded too much information on them but they were fun.
