On the Table 6"x6" oil

To Purchase please contact me.

Having spring fever yesterday compelled me to play hooky.  Today someone else inhabited my body and painted this painting.   I swear it was not me!   It was like I had never painted before, it was all so foreign to me but I kept at it and it is finally done.   Whew!

Sun Bathers 6"x6" oil

Sold
While the urge is strong I can not simply scrape off my life and start over, however that is exactly what I did to my painting today.   I rubbed out the oil can I was working on painted these bottles.  Momma said there'd be days like this.

Giving you the raspberries 6"x6" oil

Sold
Thought I would try a more dramatic set up.   I like the background, flower and berries being in the same color family because it makes the flower almost disappear and all you notice is a little texture.  Making the raspberries more bright pinkish orange makes them stand out.   Tried to see them just as a whole shape with color value changes.  Fun!

Lincoln in gris and color two 6"x8" oil paintings

Sold
This was the Daily PaintWorks Challenge of the week.   I did not paint them side by side but painted the grey one first then the color version.   I loved painting the gris version because you are only concerned with value which I am always stressing the importance of it to my students.  At one point he looked like Henry Fonda!     Love the little cowlick in his hair!   Had to make both of them off center just to please me.

In a description of himself he stated that his skin was dark and his eyes were grey.   Had to give him a red tie, a spot of red is always nice don't you think!   And it makes him so dressy which I'm sure he hated.   It was a challenge to paint the two of them in the same time I would have painted one!   Well I did go over the time limit I set on myself by 30 minutes.   Fun challenge, I even dreamed about it last night.

Poison 6"x6" oil

Sold
The poison is Resorcinol, what ever that is.   I don't think I will use it in the sauce tonight.  The middle bottle is labeled Bryonia which seems to be an irritant poison and then there is the Pluto water laxative.   I wonder what would happen if I mix them all together...

Little Green Pluto 6"x6" oil

I know a couple that are both pharmacist and they kindly loaned me a few old bottles that they have.   The little green bottle is a liquid laxative labeled PLUTO.   Is that because it will send you to outer space after taking it?   The large bottle in the foreground is from the manufacture Mallinckrodt and has a label on the side that is hand dated back in 1957.  I'm sure it is past it's expiration date.

The usual suspects 6"x6" oil

Believe it or not these are the same bottles I used in yesterday's painting.  I like this set up better because of the way the light comes through the bottles.  It has much more drama which makes for brighter color.  Interesting experiment.  I guess this is another series.  At first I always think I will just do a subject for one or two times and then move on to something that I can make into a series but what often happens is that the subject becomes the series because I keep thinking of things to do with them.  This is my fourth bottle painting so I guess I am doing a series of them.  Do you know that I did this without even discussing it with myself first!   The gall!

Cotton seed oil 6"x6" oil

Back in the studio today slaving away on some newly acquired bottles.  The one with the milky substance is Cotton seed oil, I don't think they use it to oil cotton seeds, what do they use it for?

Grapes and pears 8"x10" oil

Sold
This is also from the Bill Fletcher workshop I attended this past weekend.   It was our last painting and a more complicated set up and we had a little less than three hours to start and complete.  So under the gun or should I say timer we painted away, laughed and giggled until the time was up.  Ding!

Vase with oranges 8"x10" oil

Sold
Day two at the Bill Fletcher workshop.   Here I chose to work on light and shadow, having a halo on the white object and keeping it painterly.   I think I did better on this one, we had almost an hour of painting time.

Two bottles 6"x6" oil

Carrying on with the theme of using only three colors (burnt sienna, ultramarine blue, titanium white) here is what came out of today's efforts.   The shadow from the blue bottle was not really that color but when you are doing this exercise you need to paint the color value not the color itself.    Most of painting is value anyway.

Three bottles, three colors 6"x6" oil

Wind Master 6"x6" oil on gessobord

Sold
This painting was done in response to Michael Naples painting challenge from the Daily Paintworks site.
The challenge was to paint the Zippo lighter that he had photographed using these three colors only, burnt sienna, ultramarine blue and titanium white.  As some of you know I have done portraits using those three colors so the process is familiar.  I chose instead to use a lighter I have which is a Wind Master using colored paper close to the colors in his photograph.  One big difference is that my lighter is not shinny but burnished and of course being a different brand the mechanics are different.   It was a fun challenge.
The printing plant where my father worked gave him the lighter when he left for the Korean War, he never smoked as far as I knew so the lighter is like new also he returned to his job when the war was over.   Worked for them until he retired.

The blueberry tumble, 6"x6" oil

Sold
It got so dark in the studio this afternoon that I had to move everything over to the large windows.   Painting was ok in the light but taking the photograph afterwards was a bit tricky.   The name is inspired by gymnastics, can't you just see them bouncing and flipping out and away from the bowl.

The Fedora 8"x10" oil on gessobord

Sold
A friend could not go to the Saturday open studio session so I went in her place.   The model did a great job of getting back into the pose and holding it.   We had a little trouble with the lights flickering on and off but otherwise it all went well.   The room was crowded with other artist and  few of them I knew.   It was a fun morning.

Hanging on 6"x6" oil

Sold
As the parade of excited cherries passed below they were unaware that there was one left behind in the bowl of confinement.   He was hanging on to the side and was going to lift himself up and out as soon as the parade had gone by.   He was so excited that he was soon going to be alone and away from the noise and commotion so he could take a nap under the oak tree in the shade.

Partners 6"x6" oil

Sold
These cherries are very dark almost black so the only change in color is the reflections of the color around them.  I love using this yellow background because it is so sunny looking and in the winter we need as much sunnyness as possible.   I also like the cool of the white bowl against the sunny part. :)

Rick, charcoal 9'x12"

We had this tall young man today, he is my cousin's son so we figured he is my second cousin or was it cousin once removed??    Anyway he used to own my dog Whirly Girl so we will just call him Whirly Girl's dad.     I took WG with me today and she was so excited to see him and she proceeded to get filthy because the floor where we have our group is an art floor and all of you know what that means!   Needless to say she is getting a bath as soon as I am done here.   (SHHH, don't tell her she hates it.)    Oh Whirly Girl.... want to do something fun!
