"Portrait experiment" 14in x 11in oil

In order to improve and grow, we artist are always trying new things and experimenting with different methods.   Today I used a limited palette consisting of titanium white, ivory black, cadmium red and yellow ochre.   I found that using those 4 colors simplified the color mixing process.   I will have to try it again.

Thank you for viewing my art.

Two bottles 6"x6" oil

Carrying on with the theme of using only three colors (burnt sienna, ultramarine blue, titanium white) here is what came out of today's efforts.   The shadow from the blue bottle was not really that color but when you are doing this exercise you need to paint the color value not the color itself.    Most of painting is value anyway.

Three bottles, three colors 6"x6" oil

This painting has been painted using three colors, burnt sienna, ultramarine blue and titanium white.  At this point it really becomes a value study.

Wind Master 6"x6" oil on gessobord

Sold
This painting was done in response to Michael Naples painting challenge from the Daily Paintworks site.
The challenge was to paint the Zippo lighter that he had photographed using these three colors only, burnt sienna, ultramarine blue and titanium white.  As some of you know I have done portraits using those three colors so the process is familiar.  I chose instead to use a lighter I have which is a Wind Master using colored paper close to the colors in his photograph.  One big difference is that my lighter is not shinny but burnished and of course being a different brand the mechanics are different.   It was a fun challenge.
The printing plant where my father worked gave him the lighter when he left for the Korean War, he never smoked as far as I knew so the lighter is like new also he returned to his job when the war was over.   Worked for them until he retired.
