"I found a home!" 6"x6" oil on gessoboard

Sold

Nosey was wandering around the Giant's house when she came across these large black things.  She hollered to Sprightly, "Do you remember the thyme about the old woman in a shoe?   Well, I think I found a home just like that one."  Sprightly looked at the two large black objects and thought, she might be right!  These two big shoes look very roomy so he said,   "Could we move in tonight?"

"The Stare-down>" 6"x6" oil on gessoboard

Sold

The Peppers were just hanging about waiting for the chef to arrive when Nosey came along.   She stared at the peppers, they stared back and she wondered what they were waiting for and wondered if she could eat them.

"I love this cheese! 6"x6" oil on gessoboard

To purchase, please contact me. $100

"It has taken me days to figure out where the giant keeps the cheese and the answer is that it is not always in the same place twice. Unless you count the large cold metal box that that she keeps all the food in.   I have tried and tried but can't find a way in.  I have to depend on the giant putting the cheese out on a plate and hope that she leaves the room so I can make my move."

Nosey leaped with joy when she finally found the cheese.  I think this is my favorite.  It took a while to set it up but I think it was worth it.

"Sarah M. #2" 8"x10" oil on canvas

To purchase, please contact me. $100

If you have ever used a live model, I'm sure you can identify with the "relaxing into the pose" that is only natural.  Within the first 30 minutes I sketch in the basic attitude of the pose.   In this case I saw part o fher back and she had her chin stretched out.    As several hour pose went on each time she got back into the pose, which was not comfortable for her, the pose changed a little as did the shadows etc.   I loved the shadows on the skin or should I say highlights.  Oh!  I just liked them both and did the best I could.

"Sprightly tells all" 6"x6" oil on gessoboard

To purchase, please contact me. $100

Sprightly felt sorry for Nosey because she had been up for days after eating those chocolate covered coffee beans, so he decided to tell her where she most likely would find some cheese.   She was very grateful and couldn't wait to get going on her search.
As you see I couldn't resist in putting both of Steve Worthington's bronze mice together in one painting.

Sold

"Yeah, I need a biscuit alright!   Preferably one with some cheese on it!  If I have one more of these chocolate covered coffee beans I'm going to explode!  As it is I haven't slept in three days."   Poor Nosey, just could not resist the temptation and now she was at her last frazzled wits end.

"Taking a chance" 6"x6" oil on gessoboard

To purchase, please contact me. $100

Nosey decided to take a chance and tiptoe through the marble mine field so that he could take a peek inside the top drawer of the cabinet that the Giant liked to use.   "Surely there is cheese in there, why else would the Giant have any interest in it.  Drat! It is something called charcoal pencils and doesn't smell anything like cheese!"  Nosey was very disappointed and now she has to go back through the mine field!

In this painting I broke from my usual color scheme and used muted colors.  I rather like it and it makes the glow of the marbles seem bright.  I don't think it would look like a cabinet except for the detail in the lower right corner.  The bronze mouse is a sculpture from Steve Worthington, to view more of his sculptures click here for his blog.

"Is that cheese?" 6"x6" oil on gessoboard

Sold

Nosey was quite hungry and was told that there was some cheese that was square with some hole like shapes in it, and was quiet tasty. She came across something that looked like it could be cheese but it didn't have the right aroma like cheese and when she bit into it she realized that indeed it was not.  Darn!

This is Sarah's first time modeling for us on Friday.   She showed up in this fabulous outfit, we all liked it immediately.  As I tend to over do these portraits I decided to post it today even tho it is not as finished as I like.   I think it is better to stop when ahead rather than to overwork the piece.

"A bite of pie" 6"x6" oil on gessoboard

Sold

I have learned something valuable about taking and saving photos of your art.   If you are going to use them for printing you need to take the digital photos at a high resolution and don't adjust in any way except for cropping.   Adjusting in your iphoto section such as a lighter or darker exposure, sharpening or any other thing make the pixels look messy or noisy.

The aroma of fresh baked pie filled the air this morning during class and when the pie cooled we each had a piece.  This particular pie was made with tart cherries from my tree and some blueberries.   The only cherries left now are the ones that are too high to reach so the birds and squirrels will eat those soon.

"Who's the fairest..." 6"x6" oil on gessoboard

Sold
I enjoyed the silver cup yesterday so much I wanted to repeat it.   The cherry branches are tricky since they hang down on the tree, and the cherries which are heavy hang below the leaves so when setting up in order to see the cherries you would have to turn over the branch which then would show the underside of the leaves which, I think, is not as attractive.   Besides I like the light coming through the leaves and making them luminous.

"Two red cherries" 6"x6" oil on gessoboard

While painting these twigs, leaves and luscious cherries and their shadows it feels like an abstract where I'm just painting shape and color.   The green has quite a bit or red and orange in them to grey them out sufficiently so they are not a bright green.

"Four red cherries" 6"x6" oil on gessoboard

Sold
It's that time of year again when my cherry tree is full and soon it will be time to pick them and make a pie.  But before that time comes I thought I'd use this opportunity to paint them first.  I may be a little bit smarter than last year because I thought to put the branch in water so the leaves didn't wilt during the painting.  What a difference a year makes!

"What is this stuff?" 6"x6" oil on gessoboard

Sold
Sprightly was in a daze wondering around looking for more delicious cheese.  "What is this stuff?  The giant sure spends a lot of time with these things.  Maybe it is something to eat?"   But when he smelled it he just couldn't figure out why anyone would to have anything to do with this stinky stuff.

For the first half of the painting I wondered why I chose these objects, but in the end I think it might be one of my favorites!    I have struggled every time to get the bronze coloring right.  Of course it looks different when using different lighting and with different colors surrounding.

Carolyn was our ever faithful model today.   Silly me!  I forgot to schedule a model and it was just the she was available at the last minute.    I love the way her eyes are to the far left.   I think in this painting she looks like Cindi Lauper of the "Girls just want to have fun" fame.

"Is it food?" 6"x6" oil on gessoboard

Sold
Sprightly has been wandering around for over a week now and so far has only found some swiss cheese and blind mice (which turned out to be chocolate!)   His attention was aimed at this shiny object.   Can I eat it?   Is it food?   As it turned out it was not food and in fact it was hard to get a hold on it and keep it still.   The shiny object seemed to roll all over the place.   When it rolled on to the floor Sprightly was afraid the "Giant" heard it and would come to investigate.  He thought, "I'd better skedaddle"

I thought long and hard about if it would be a good idea to use this dark book that was about the same color/value as the mouse.   In the end you can see I decided to keep the book.  There is basically three colors and I think it unifies the painting.  And I'm sticking to it!

"Three blind mice" 7"x5" oil on canvas

To purchase, please contact me. $100

Sprightly found these three blind mice (he knew they were blind because their eyes were white) and they were telling him to beware of the knife.  He was mesmerized because they were singing this rhyme... and from then on he was wary of knives and farmers wives, what ever those were!
Three blind mice, three blind mice,
See how they run, see how they run,
They all ran after the farmer's wife,
Who cut off their tails with a carving knife,
Did you ever see such a thing in your life,
As three blind mice?
