Sunset in Cuenca 6"x6" oil

Please click here for purchase information.
This was the view of the old part of Cuenca that I could see from my bedroom everyday.   The sky was always changing.  I struggled with this one and still am not happy but the day is getting dark and I need to quit painting, so here it is.

Looking at traffic 6"x6" oil

Please click here to view purchase information.
She stopped, looked at the traffic and then crossed the street.   Now the dangerous thing was not the traffic but the sidewalk itself.  Seems they have these "ramps" (do you see the one in front of her?) on the sidewalk to allow carts and or cars to get up the curb, but while walking down the street you have to be super aware of these so as not to trip or slip on the slope.  Slippery slope indeed!   One day while trying to negotiate the people on the sidewalk and trying to look into store windows one of my feet stepped on this slope and slipped toward the street because the tile was so slick.   Sometimes I even tripped on the elevation.   It is very dangerous to look anywhere but where your feet are going.  This sidewalk is very spacious compared to some where you could hardly pass anyone coming the opposite way.  The person I was with slipped or tripped one day on one of these ramps and went down face first, busted his lip and head and now has a nice scar on his lip as proof.

Bethan in Black & white 9"x12" oil

Please click here for purchase information.
There was a very light turnout of painters in our Friday Go Figure group.   I hope we get more people coming because it would be nice to be able to continue our Friday sessions.  We had Bethan today who is an excellent model.   Thought we would do something in classic black/white/red.   Sorta like a santa suit but not.   That is what was missing!

Dos Llamas 6"x6" oil

Sold
While traveling in Ecuador, outside of Cuenca, we came upon these two llamas that were tied up in a field. As we walked closer the white one was eyeing us in a most suspicious way.   I personally was not going any closer.   Everywhere we went all the animals seemed to be tied up either in the fields or on the side of the road, and my guess was that it was cheeper than putting up a fence.

Rearranging lettuce 5"x7" oil

One Saturday we went to the large market in Cuenca, Ecuador to buy some shrimp and let me tell you it was an experience to remember. There were so many sights and smells.    It was a maze there, we actually got lost.   These two women were rearranging their basket of produce.

Purple sash 6"x6" oil

Sold
Some of the women in Cuenca had two braids and some had one and a lot of them wore Panama hats which are really made in Cuenca, Ecuador.  This skirt looked like wool with embroidery on the  bottom edge.  They don't like their picture taken so I was always sneaking around trying to take one on the sly.

Eating chips 6"x6" oil

For some reason I did not expect to see these indigenous women walking the streets of Cuenca, Ecuador.   They were everywhere, this one had a small blanket on her head.   After three weeks of seeing this everyday it was starting to feel sort of normal.   The two in the store front were eating doritos

Green Dress 9"x12" oil

It has been so long since I painted and posted that I have forgotten how.   Finally, I have returned from Ecuador and what a feast for the eyes it is.   I took lots of photos and hope to be using them as reference for paintings.   This portrait was done last Friday and I forgot to take a picture of it on Friday and again on Saturday... see what I mean about forgetting!  I felt very rusty but I think it turned out OK in spite of it all.

Pattie 6"x6" oil

This was the first portrait I've done in about 6 weeks and I was a little nervous that I would not remember what to do and after a the first half hour with a couple of total wipe offs it started coming back.  But now I won't be able to paint a portrait from life for another 4 weeks!   I will be in Ecuador on vacation so I will not be able to ship anything out until after December 8, but should be able to still ship out for Christmas at that time!

Pear inspection 6"x6" oil

Sold
I feel so rusty!   I have been out of town taking care of my sister who had fallen and broke her ankle in three places.  They did surgery and now she has 11 screws and a metal plate so going through an airport will never be the same for her again.   I had a good time there in Port Aransas TX despite the circumstance, and the weather was wonderful and I even got a dip in the pool.   She is recovering nicely and doing better.   I haven't painted a daily for more than a month and this one is a little rough.

I am home for about a week and then off to Ecuador for three weeks.   I can ship out paintings this week and then the next time I will be able to ship out will be after December 8.   Sorry for the inconvenience.

Morgan 8"x10" oil

This painting is one that I painted on the second rainy day in the Phil Starke workshop.   I found out that he is equally as good with the figure as he is with landscape.   He is a great painter and instructor and maybe some day I can take a landscape workshop from him in which it does not rain.   This sketch was painted in  about one and a half hours.

Juniper Beach, Ohio River 9"x12" oil sketch

Ok, quit your laughing, this was the painting I did outside at the Phil Starke Workshop here  in Louisville KY this past weekend. Phil is a wonderful artist and a very good teacher.   It was unfortunate that it rained the whole weekend, except for this afternoon on the first day which was mostly overcast with the sun coming out a little.   This is not a good painting and as you can see I have a long way to go but you have to start somewhere!   And I am baring it for all to see.   Ok, you can continue to laugh and point.

A Berry Light Load 6"x6" oil

This cute VW toy car belongs to someone else and I must give it back soon so I am trying to get a lot of "milage" out of it.   I know you are groaning over the pun!  Get over it.   Every time I paint this little car I think I have exhausted every possibility but then later or in a day or two another idea pops into my minds eye and I am compelled to paint another.   Don't you think this little blackberry looks like a very dark christmas tree?   Maybe there should be a north star. ...and this is how it starts.

1940 Mercury 6"x6" oil

Sold
This 1940 Mercury was a burgundy color, actually it almost looked black.   This era of car is my favorite, however I don't think I would want a chopped top.

1955 Ford Truck 6"x6" oil

Sold
This 1955 Ford truck came all the way from Texas and had been lowered so close to the ground that you could only get a piece of paper between the street and the bumper.  Well, maybe you could get two sheets of paper under there, but anyway the cab was so tall that you could not even look into the windows to see the dashboard!  Pretty cool truck!
